Sweden ferry routes, schedules & crossing times

Sweden has1614 ferry routes, but they belong to three very different worlds, and knowing which one you are travelling on tells you almost everything — whether you pay, whether you can book, and which app sells the ticket. Most crossings are short vägfärjor, the free state road ferries that work like moving bridges across sounds, river mouths and fjords. A second group is the archipelago passenger boats around Stockholm, Gothenburg and the southern coast, run as part of regional public transport. And then there is the long, booked crossing out to Gotland. This guide explains how each kind works so you can plan a Swedish ferry trip with confidence.

The three kinds of Swedish ferry

Unlike Norway, where almost every ferry is a car ferry, Sweden's network splits three ways. Road ferries (Trafikverket Färjerederiet) are free and need no ticket. Archipelago and river boats are folded into the local transport authority and are paid with a normal transit ticket. Gotland is a commercial, bookable crossing in a class of its own. Match your route to one of these three and the rules fall into place.

Free state road ferries (Färjerederiet)

Trafikverket Färjerederiet operates roughly 68 vessels on about 40 routes — cable ferries and free-sailing ferries that carry cars, cyclists and foot passengers across the water where a bridge would otherwise stand. Because these ferries are legally part of the public road network, they are free of charge: there is no ticket, no booth and no advance booking. You simply drive to the terminal, queue in the marshalling lanes and board on a first-come, first-served basis. A typical example is the Gullmarsleden between Lysekil and Uddevalla, a roughly 10-minute drive-on crossing. Importantly, this is not a recent reform: Swedish road ferries have been free by design for decades as part of the road system, so there was never a "free ferry" scheme to introduce.

The Stockholm archipelago: Waxholmsbolaget

The scheduled passenger boats that thread the Stockholm archipelago (skärgården) are run mainly by Waxholmsbolaget, a company owned by Region Stockholm — the same regional authority behind SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik). The two are sister public-transport bodies, not one company. Departures cluster around three staffed terminals: Strömkajen in central Stockholm, just below the Grand Hôtel; Vaxholm; and Stavsnäs vinterhamn, the mainland gateway to the outer archipelago and Sandhamn. You can buy Waxholmsbolaget's own tickets in its app, online or on board. SL tickets are always valid on the Strömkajen–Vaxholm stretch, and in low season a valid SL travelcard of 30 days or longer is accepted on all Waxholmsbolaget services. Some seasonal fast services take a seat reservation, so check before you travel.

Commercial Stockholm boats: Strömma's Cinderella line

Alongside the public boats, Strömma runs the tourist-oriented Cinderellabåtarna (M/S Cinderella) from the Strandvägen and Nybrokajen quays in central Stockholm — a separate commercial service where SL and Waxholmsbolaget passes do not apply. It sails daily from late April to late September to Vaxholm, Grinda, Gällnö and Sandhamn, with the run out to Sandhamn taking about two and a half hours. Tickets are bought from Strömma and can be pre-booked.

Gothenburg and the Bohuslän coast: Västtrafik

On the west coast, the southern Gothenburg archipelago is served by Styrsöbolaget on behalf of Västtrafik and is fully integrated into ordinary public transport — the same Västtrafik ticket covers ferries, buses and trams. The archipelago lines 282, 283 and 284 reach Styrsö, Brännö, Asperö, Källö and the smaller islands from Saltholmen and Stenpiren, all within Västtrafik's Zone A. In central Gothenburg the short Älvsnabbare cross-river shuttle over the Göta älv has been free since 2011, funded by the city. North along the Bohuslän coast you will also find free Färjerederiet road ferries such as the Gullmarsleden.

Gotland: the one big booked crossing

Destination Gotland operates the island's lifeline routes, Nynäshamn–Visby and Oskarshamn–Visby, with a crossing of about three hours. This is a commercial, paid ferry that carries cars, motorhomes, motorcycles and pets, and it is the one Swedish crossing you should book in advance — especially in summer, and above all if you are bringing a vehicle or want a cabin. It is not part of any regional flat fare; tickets are bought directly from Destination Gotland.

Skåne and the island of Ven

In the far south, Ventrafiken links Landskrona (Skeppsbron) with the island of Ven (Bäckviken) in about 30 minutes, running roughly every couple of hours with extra sailings in high season. Skånetrafiken tickets are only valid here if you hold a 30-day season ticket covering the relevant zone; single, 24-hour and 72-hour Skånetrafiken tickets are not accepted, so most travellers simply buy a Ventrafiken ticket instead.

How you pay

There is no single national ferry ticket in Sweden — each county authority sets its own rules. Road ferries are free. Archipelago and river boats fold into the regional transport authority and are bought in that region's app: Västtrafik on the west coast, SL and Waxholmsbolaget in Stockholm, Skånetrafiken and Ventrafiken in Skåne, and Blekingetrafiken along the Blekinge coast. Gotland and the commercial Stockholm boats are booked separately from their operators.

Do you need to book?

For the free road ferries and the regional archipelago boats you rarely book — you turn up and board, though a few peak-season fast services take a seat reservation. The clear exception is Gotland, where advance booking is strongly advised in summer and essential if you are taking a car or cabin.

Foot passengers, bikes and cars

The free road ferries carry everyone — pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles — at no charge. On the archipelago and commercial lines, foot passengers pay the normal fare and bicycles are usually allowed, but space is limited and the rules vary by operator, so check before you rely on bringing one. Only some routes take cars: most archipelago boats are passenger-only, while the road ferries and the Gotland crossing are built for vehicles.

When to travel

Summer, from June to August, is peak season: archipelago timetables expand, the Gotland ferries fill up and busy road-ferry crossings can queue on holiday weekends. Outside summer, services thin out — several archipelago lines drop to a reduced winter timetable, so always check the current schedule for the season you are travelling in.
