Visingsöleden Schedules 2026

Sweden runs about 40 road ferries as part of its public road network, and travelling on them is free. Visingsöleden is one of exactly two exceptions. If you are crossing from Gränna to Visingsö, you are paying — and you have to pay before you reach the ramp.

A toll route in a free network

Trafikverket’s Färjerederiet operates the national road-ferry fleet, and states plainly that travel is free of charge except on Ekeröleden and Visingsöleden. The reason is in who commissions them: 38 of the routes are run for Trafikverket itself, while Visingsöleden is operated on behalf of Jönköping Municipality and Ekeröleden for Ekerö Municipality. 6,200 metres across Vättern

The crossing runs between Gränna and Visingsö on Lake Vättern in Jönköping County. The route is 6,200 metres long and the passage takes about 30 minutes — a figure our own timetable matches exactly, with 28 departures in each direction. For a lake crossing that is a long way; Vättern is the second largest lake in Sweden and Visingsö sits well out in it.

Buy the ticket before you drive on

Booking and ticketing must be completed before you board. You cannot roll up to the ramp and settle with the crew, which is how the free road ferries elsewhere in the country work. Timetable, prices, booking and tickets are all published by Jönköping Municipality rather than by Trafikverket, so the ferry operator’s own page will send you elsewhere to buy.

You can call the ferry from an app

Färjerederiet publishes an app, Trafikinfo Färjerederiet, carrying timetables and disruption information for the whole road-ferry network — and on routes that work on demand it lets you summon the ferry directly. There is also a traffic information map showing timetable changes and live disruption.

Two weather stations you can read before you leave

The operator publishes live links to weather stations at Visingsö harbour and Gränna harbour. On a thirty-minute open-water crossing of a lake known for sudden weather, being able to check conditions at both ends before setting off is a genuinely useful piece of public data, and it is not something most ferry operators offer.
