Australia ferry routes & schedules — islands, cities & Tasmania

Australia's ferry scene splits into three distinct worlds. First are the city commuter networks — Sydney's ten-route harbour system and Brisbane's CityCat river service — moving millions of daily passengers. Second is a rich layer of island and tourist ferries that are the country's real signature. And third is one true long-distance ocean crossing: the Bass Strait run to Tasmania. These routes are separated by thousands of kilometres and do not connect into a single network — Australia is simply too vast for that.

Bass Strait — the flagship long-haul crossing

The Spirit of Tasmania, operated by government-owned TT-Line, is the only way to take your own vehicle across Bass Strait, sailing 242 nautical miles (448 km) between GeelongPort in Victoria and Devonport in northern Tasmania. Crossings run nine to eleven hours, most often overnight with cabins, plus daytime sailings in peak season. This is a full ro-pax ship carrying cars, caravans, motorhomes and freight — key, because Tasmania has no bridge or tunnel. Two new 1,800-passenger ships, Spirit of Tasmania IV and V, enter service in 2026, lifting capacity sharply.

SeaLink — the island-tourism giant

SeaLink (parent Kelsian Group, founded 1989, based in Adelaide) runs the country's best-known island ferries: Cape Jervis–Penneshaw (Kangaroo Island, a ~45-minute car ferry), Townsville–Magnetic Island, River Heads–K'gari (Fraser Island), Cleveland–North Stradbroke Island, and Kettering–Bruny Island in Tasmania — the island's only vehicle link. Perth's car-free Rottnest Island, famed for its quokkas, is reached by high-speed catamaran from Fremantle and central Perth (Rottnest Express) and from Hillarys (Rottnest Fast Ferries).

Sydney Harbour and the vehicle ferries

Sydney's well-known harbour network (Sydney Ferries, plus the express Manly Fast Ferry) radiates from Circular Quay to Manly, Parramatta, Watsons Bay and Taronga Zoo — the classic Circular Quay–Manly run takes about 30 minutes, or 18 by fast ferry. Several routes are true car ferries: besides the Spirit of Tasmania and the island crossings, Searoad Ferries carries vehicles across the mouth of Port Phillip Bay between Queenscliff and Sorrento (~40 minutes), saving roughly three hours of driving around the bay. Rottnest, by contrast, is entirely car-free.

Seasons and booking

The Australian summer (December–February) is peak for island and tourist ferries, and vehicle space on the Spirit of Tasmania, Kangaroo Island and Bruny Island routinely sells out over the December–January school holidays and Easter — book well ahead. Whale-watching cruises run roughly June to November on the east coast. Most ferries operate year-round; Searoad, Bruny and Kangaroo Island run 365 days a year.

Visa — Australia is not visa-free

Every foreign visitor except New Zealand citizens needs a visa or electronic authority before arriving — there is no visa-on-arrival. Most European travellers use the free eVisitor (subclass 651); US, UK, Canadian, Japanese and several Asian passport holders use the AUD 20 Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601); and everyone else, including Turkish passport holders, applies for a Visitor visa (subclass 600). All allow tourist stays of up to about three months. Arrange your authority before you travel.
