Portugal ferry routes & schedules — Lisbon, Algarve & islands

Portugal's ferry world splits into three very different arenas. There are the busy Tagus (Tejo) commuter ferries that shuttle greater Lisbon across the river; the Atlantic island lifelines of Madeira and the Azores; and the short car-ferry hop across the Sado estuary to Tróia, south of Lisbon.

Transtejo & Soflusa, Lisbon's state-owned commuter operator, carries tens of millions of passengers a year between the capital and the south bank of the Tagus. The classic ride is the Cais do Sodré–Cacilhas "cacilheiro" (about ten minutes), with postcard views of the city and the 25 de Abril Bridge; other routes link Terreiro do Paço with Barreiro and Cais do Sodré with Seixal and Montijo. Integrated with Lisbon's metro, trains and buses, the fleet is now going all-electric as the company marks its 50th year in 2026.

Setúbal–Tróia and the Sado estuary

South of Lisbon, Atlantic Ferries runs the vehicle ferry across the mouth of the Sado estuary between Setúbal and the Tróia Peninsula — about 15–20 minutes, with 24-hour catamarans, saving roughly three hours of driving around the estuary. It is the fastest way to Tróia's beaches and golf resorts, and to the estuary's famous resident bottlenose dolphins.

Madeira — Funchal to Porto Santo

The only sea link between Madeira and its golden-sand sister island is the Porto Santo Line ferry Lobo Marinho, sailing Funchal–Porto Santo in about 2 hours 20 minutes. Fitted with a restaurant, cinema and first-class lounge, it is the only practical way to bring a car to Porto Santo and the start of many a Madeiran beach holiday.

The Azores inter-island ferries

In the mid-Atlantic Azores, Atlânticoline knits the nine islands together. Its heart is the "Triangle" of Faial, Pico and São Jorge: the Horta–Madalena hop takes just 30 minutes and lets you combine Faial's marina with Pico's volcano and vineyards in a day. The important Corvo–Flores link serves the remote western group. Sailings concentrate in summer and thin out sharply in winter, when Atlantic weather can disrupt crossings.

Visa and entry

Portugal is in the EU and the Schengen Area — and so are the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores. All the ferry travel above, whether across the Tagus or between the islands, is domestic. Visitors from outside the Schengen zone, including Turkish passport holders, need a Schengen visa to enter Portugal; there is no separate island entry requirement once you are in the country.
