Ferries from Cais do Sodré

Six or seven crossings an hour, twenty hours a day, ten minutes each way. Cais do Sodré runs the busiest commuter water route in this guide, and since the Cacilhas boats were replaced with electric vessels it does it without an engine note.

The Cacilhas shuttle

Boats run from about 05:35 until 01:40, with 6 to 7 crossings an hour at peak. The crossing takes roughly 10 minutes. Our timetable holds 372 active sailings from this terminal — more than any other European port on this site.

The operator is Transtejo & Soflusa, Lisbon's public ferry company, and the Cacilhas route now runs on new electric vessels.

The other two routes are different boats

From the same terminal, services run to Montijo at about 25 minutes and Seixal at around 20. Those use diesel catamarans rather than the electric ferries.

Three destinations, two vessel types, one terminal. Check the departure board rather than following the crowd — the Cacilhas queue is always the longest and is usually not the one you want if you are going elsewhere.

Why anyone crosses

Cacilhas is the foot of Almada on the south bank, under the Cristo Rei statue and a short walk or lift ride from the viewpoints looking back at Lisbon. It is also the cheapest boat trip in the city and the classic local answer to where to eat fish.

For most passengers, though, this is simply how you get to work: the south bank is dormitory territory and the river is faster than the bridge.

⚠ It is public transport, not an excursion

Fares, ticketing and crowding follow metro logic. Peak-hour boats fill, there are no reservations, and the terminal is a transport interchange rather than a waiting lounge.

Cais do Sodré station — metro, suburban rail to Cascais and the ferry — is the same building, which is why this is the most connected point on the Lisbon waterfront.

Compared with Belém

The Belém terminal further west serves Trafaria and Porto Brandão on a much thinner, afternoon-weighted timetable. The two are not alternatives — they cross to different places on the south bank.
