Reading the map

Each marker is a port we hold a timetable for, and the lines between them are scheduled crossings rather than shipping lanes — a boat on a published schedule, not every vessel that passes. Click a port to see which crossings leave it and how long each takes.

The density is uneven on purpose, because the sea traffic is. Norway alone carries 1,224 of the routes on this map across 744 quays: in a country cut by fjords the ferry is a stretch of road with water under it, and every side arm needs its own crossing. A Mediterranean island chain shows the opposite shape — fewer lines, far longer, each one carrying a whole island’s traffic.

Ports without a published timetable are not plotted. A quay we know exists but cannot show sailings for would be a pin that answers nothing, so it waits until the schedule arrives.
