Sustainable ferries
The move to cleaner crossings, led by Norway's world-first fleet of battery-electric ferries.
Travel smarter on the water
Ferries come in every shape — overnight ro-pax ships with cabins, high-speed catamarans that skim between islands, tiny harbour shuttles and car ferries built for road trips. Knowing how each one works, when to book and what to expect at the port turns a stressful connection into the best part of the journey.
These guides distil the practical details that actually matter: bringing a vehicle or a pet, reading a seasonal timetable, the difference between foot-passenger and vehicle travel, and how to string several crossings into one smooth itinerary.
New to it all? Begin with our first-time traveller's guide, then pair the guides with the trip planner and our destination guides to plan the whole journey from first port to last.
Ferry travel FAQ
Can I take a car on a ferry?
Most longer crossings carry vehicles, and many short ones do too. Book your car space in advance — especially in peak season — and arrive at the port early, as vehicle check-in usually closes well before departure. Each route page notes the operators, so you can confirm vehicle decks with the company before booking.
How early should I arrive for a ferry?
As a rule of thumb, arrive 30–45 minutes early as a foot passenger and 60–90 minutes early with a vehicle. International and high-season sailings need more buffer. Our guides break down check-in and boarding for different ferry types.
Do I need to book ferry tickets in advance?
For foot passengers on frequent routes you can often buy on the day, but vehicles, cabins and popular summer island crossings sell out — book ahead. The guides explain when advance booking matters and when it doesn't.
Can I bring a pet on the ferry?
Many ferries welcome pets, with rules ranging from designated pet areas and kennels to pet-friendly cabins. Policies vary by operator and route, so check ahead — our pet travel guide covers what to expect.
How much does a ferry ticket cost?
Fares vary enormously — from a few euros for a short foot-passenger hop to several hundred for a car and cabin on a long overnight crossing. Prices are usually dynamic, rising as a sailing fills, so booking early and travelling midweek or off-peak almost always costs less. Our booking guides show where the savings are.
Are ferries cancelled in bad weather?
Yes — strong winds and high seas can delay or cancel sailings, and lighter high-speed catamarans are grounded before slower conventional ships. Check the operator's live service status on the day, especially in autumn, winter, and during the Aegean's summer meltemi winds, and know your rights to a transfer or refund.
Can you sleep on an overnight ferry?
Overnight ferries offer private cabins with beds and en-suite bathrooms, cheaper reclining seats, and sometimes an open deck. Cabins sell out first in peak season, so book early if you want to sleep flat. Some long Mediterranean routes also let campervan owners sleep aboard in their vehicle.
Do ferries have WiFi, food and power onboard?
Larger ferries typically have cafés or restaurants, shops, toilets and at least some power sockets, and many now offer WiFi — though at sea it can be slow, so download what you need first. Small local shuttles may have none of this. Our onboard-facilities guide covers what to expect by ship size.
How do I plan a multi-stop ferry trip?
Map your crossings in the direction the ferries actually run, allow at least a night on each island, and build in a buffer day before any onward flight in case a sailing is cancelled. Our multi-stop and island-hopping guides give sample itineraries; the trip planner shows which routes and operators connect each port.
