Yes, you can take an EV or hybrid on a ferry — but expect a charging ban, a check-in declaration and, in Greece, a 40% battery limit. Your 2026 guide.

Short answer: yes, you can almost always take a fully electric car (BEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) on a car ferry, and millions of EV drivers do it every year without incident. But the rules around how you carry it have tightened sharply since 2024. Depending on where you sail you may have to declare the vehicle at booking, accept a windscreen sticker, park in a designated lane — and in Greece, arrive with your battery no more than 40% charged. Almost universally, you cannot charge the car during the crossing. This guide explains the 2026 rules operator by operator, the reasoning behind them, and exactly what you need to do at check-in.

Can you take an EV or hybrid on a ferry at all?

In almost every case, yes. There is no international ban on carrying electric or hybrid vehicles on passenger ferries, and no major operator refuses them outright. A roadworthy, undamaged EV is treated much like any other car: you book it, drive it aboard, apply the handbrake, and leave it on the vehicle deck for the crossing. The practical differences are all about identification, placement, charging and battery condition — not about being turned away.

The one firm exception is a damaged or defective battery. If your vehicle has visible battery or high-voltage-system damage, a dashboard fault warning, or has been in a collision, operators can and do refuse it. Recovering a crashed EV by ferry usually requires it to be professionally "certified safe" first — in the UK, typically by a technician holding the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) TechSafe accreditation or equivalent. Why the rules exist: lithium battery fire risk

The regulations are driven by one issue: the difficulty of fighting a lithium-ion battery fire in the enclosed steel box of a ship's car deck. EV fires are not necessarily more frequent than petrol or diesel fires, and marine insurers stress they are not automatically more energetic — but they behave differently. A battery in thermal runaway generates its own oxygen and heat, is extremely hard to extinguish with conventional means, can reignite hours, days or even weeks later, and cannot simply be "drained" like a fuel tank. On a crowded ro-ro deck where cars are parked bumper-to-bumper, that is a serious containment problem.

The regulatory framework is still catching up. As of 2026 there are no mandatory IMO rules written specifically for EVs on ro-ro ferries; the current SOLAS fire-safety chapter predates mass-market EVs. The IMO has issued interim, voluntary guidance, and amendments approved at MSC 107 to strengthen ro-ro passenger fire safety are phasing in from 1 January 2026, with more comprehensive mandatory EV rules widely expected around 2027. In the meantime, individual countries and operators have written their own rules — which is why the picture varies so much from route to route.

The Greece 40% battery rule (the big one)

The strictest widely-enforced rule in Europe is Greek. Since around April 2024, the Greek Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy has required that fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles board ferries with their high-voltage battery charged to no more than 40% of capacity. Crews may check this against the car's dashboard display before loading, and the final decision always rests with the ship's captain.

Key points to know:

  • Scope: It applies to domestic Greek routes (for example Piraeus to the Cyclades or Crete) and, as reported, to the international Italy–Greece crossings from Ancona, Bari and Brindisi to Igoumenitsa, Corfu and Patras. Operators such as Grimaldi Lines and others on these routes apply it.
  • Also affects gas vehicles: LPG and CNG cars must have their tanks no more than 50% full.
  • Planning headache: 40% is awkward. You must arrive at the port with a deliberately low charge, then hope to find a working charger on the island at the other end. Many drivers pre-plan a charge stop to run the battery down before boarding.
  • Contested and fluid: The rule is unpopular with EV drivers (an online petition has called for its repeal) and is exactly the kind of fast-moving regulation that can change. Treat the 40% figure as current guidance and reconfirm directly with your operator when you book, as the percentage or scope could be revised.

UK guidance: MGN 653 (best practice, not a charge limit)

UK-flagged ferries follow the Maritime and Coastguard Agency's Marine Guidance Note MGN 653 (M) Amendment 1, issued in 2023. Crucially, this is best-practice guidance, not mandatory law, and it deliberately does not impose a Greek-style state-of-charge limit. Instead it recommends:

  • Self-identification at booking so crews know which vehicles are electric or hybrid and can plan the deck layout.
  • Stowage considerations — operators may position EVs under drencher (water-deluge) systems, on open weather decks, or away from dangerous goods.
  • Inspection of suspected battery damage before boarding, with battery disconnection considered for towed vehicles.
  • For e-bikes and e-scooters, carriage preferably on weather decks and no charging on board, reflecting the higher fire risk of cheaper light-EV batteries.

Notably, MGN 653 says onboard charging can be offered — from dedicated charging stations, at the master's discretion — rather than banning it outright. In practice, though, most UK-facing operators have chosen not to allow it (see below).

Can you charge your EV on the ferry? Usually not

This is the rule that catches people out most often: on the great majority of ferries you cannot plug in and charge during the crossing. DFDS banned onboard EV charging after a car-deck fire, and does not permit it on its routes. Brittany Ferries, Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac), P&O and most Mediterranean operators likewise prohibit charging of any electric device on the vehicle deck — and that ban typically extends to e-bikes, e-scooters, hoverboards and electric mobility scooters too. Plan to arrive with enough range to reach your first charger on the far side.

There are a growing number of exceptions in Northern Europe, where purpose-built "green" ferries offer bookable onboard charging:

  • TT-Line (Travemünde–Trelleborg) has around 32 charging points on its Green Ships; you add "Power" during online booking and the battery can be recharged during the crossing.
  • Fjord Line offers 16 bookable Type 2 (up to 22 kW AC) charging bays on the high-speed Fjord FSTR between Norway and Denmark.
  • Color Line and other Norwegian operators are progressively adding charging on longer routes.

Onboard charging must almost always be reserved in advance — spaces are limited and cannot be arranged on the day. What you must declare at check-in

Declaring your EV is straightforward but not optional — crews need to know so they can place the car correctly. Typical steps:

  • At booking: select "electric" or "hybrid" from the vehicle dropdown (or add it in the notes). This gives the operator advance notice to plan the car deck.
  • At the terminal: you may be handed an "EV" card or windscreen/wing-mirror sticker to display, and directed to a designated EV lane.
  • Placement: the crew may park you near a fire-suppression system, under drenchers or on an open deck. Follow their directions on where to leave the car.
  • Confirm battery/tank levels where required (Greece: EV/PHEV ≤ 40%; LPG/CNG ≤ 50%).
  • Declare any fault or damage — dashboard warnings, recent collision damage or a known battery issue must be disclosed, and may lead to refusal.

Rules change frequently and vary by vessel and route. Always confirm the current policy with your chosen operator at the time of booking.

Practical tips before you sail

  • Check the operator's EV page before booking, not at the port. Policies differ even between routes run by the same company.
  • For Greece, plan your charge down to ≤ 40% and identify a charger at your destination island in advance — island charging can be sparse.
  • Assume you cannot charge onboard unless you have explicitly booked a charging bay on a Northern-European green ferry.
  • Arrive with margin. Loading queues, no onboard charging and limited port chargers mean you want comfortable range on both sides of the crossing.
  • Never travel with a known battery fault. A warning light can turn a routine crossing into a refusal at the ramp.
  • Keep your booking confirmation and any EV label handy — crews load faster when EVs are clearly identified.

Handled sensibly, taking an EV on a ferry is no harder than any other car — it just needs a little more forward planning around charge level and charging access.
