About the Brentwood BayMill Bay crossing

Nine departures a day, 62 sailings a week, 25 minutes — and everything runs between 07:30 and 17:55, with nothing in the evening at all.

Two day patterns cover it, and the calendar behind them is unusually long for this network: the timetable now published holds from mid-September through to the end of March. A ferry that stops before six is not carrying commuters home; it is offering an alternative to a drive.

The drive it replaces

That alternative is the Malahat, the mountain section of the Trans-Canada Highway north of Victoria and the only paved road between the city and the rest of Vancouver Island. When a crash closes it, the south of the island is cut off until it reopens. This crossing of Saanich Inlet is the way around — 25 minutes of sheltered water instead of the climb.

The ship

BC Ferries lists the Klitsa as the vessel whose regular route is Brentwood Bay to Mill Bay. It is a small-ship operation: one boat, a single ramp at each end, and a turnaround tight enough that the nine departures fit inside a working day.

Plan the last sailing before you set out

The final crossing back from Mill Bay leaves at 18:30. Miss it and the route home is the Malahat, which is precisely the road most people take this ferry to avoid. Butchart Gardens sits a few minutes from the Brentwood Bay terminal, so an afternoon there and an evening return is the one itinerary this timetable does not support.
