About

About Mill Bay

The crew collects the fare on board, and they take cash only. No card, no app, no ticket machine. On a route that has been running for a hundred years, that is the detail most likely to ruin your crossing — and almost no ferry site mentions it.

The crossing

Mill Bay to Brentwood Bay takes about 25 minutes across the Saanich Inlet, with 9 sailings in our timetable and 18 across the terminal in both directions. Operated by BC Ferries.

⚠ What the small print actually says

  • No reservations. Boarding is in order of arrival.
  • Cash or travellers cheques only, collected by the crew.
  • Check-in closes 5 minutes before departure for foot passengers, 3 minutes for vehicles.
  • Vehicles must be 40 ft or under (buses 30 ft) and under 8,000 kg.
  • No parking at the terminal.

The vessel, MV Klitsa, carries about 19 vehicles and 150 people. Nineteen cars against eighteen sailings is a genuinely small operation.

Why the crossing exists

The Saanich Inlet cuts a deep notch into southern Vancouver Island. Driving round it from Mill Bay to Brentwood Bay means going inland over the Malahat — a slower, higher and considerably longer route that closes in bad weather.

Twenty-five minutes of water replaces all of that, which is why the service has survived a century.

Where the terminal is

About a 10-minute drive south of Mill Bay village, not in it. The signage is small and the approach is residential; leave more time than the map suggests for a first visit.

What is on the far side

Brentwood Bay is on the Saanich Peninsula, minutes from Butchart Gardens and about half an hour from Victoria. For a visitor based in Victoria, this ferry is the scenic way into the Cowichan Valley.
