All Liberty Lines sailings from Milazzo are fast passenger hydrofoils and catamarans — not vehicle ferries. Approximate crossing times on a direct sailing are:

• Milazzo–Vulcano: around 50 minutes
• Milazzo–Lipari: around 1 hour 5–15 minutes
• Milazzo–Salina: around 1 hour 40 minutes to Santa Marina, a little longer to Rinella
• Milazzo–Panarea: around 2 hours
• Milazzo–Stromboli: around 2 hours 45 minutes
• Milazzo–Filicudi / Milazzo–Alicudi: around 2 hours 25 minutes to 3 hours

Many sailings call at several islands in sequence rather than running direct, so the same hydrofoil might serve Vulcano, Lipari and Salina on one run — check the specific departure time for your destination rather than assuming a fixed single-island shuttle. From Lipari, the network's hub island, onward hops to Vulcano and the other islands are much shorter — often 15–45 minutes.

Summer vs winter timetables

Liberty Lines publishes separate summer and winter timetables, with noticeably more sailings — and more direct island-to-island options — from late spring through summer. The Aeolian Islands schedule typically shifts to its summer timetable in early June, slightly later than most of the company's other routes, which is why searches for a specific month or year are so common: the schedule genuinely changes on a specific date each year, so always check the current timetable or booking engine rather than relying on last year's dates.

Hydrofoil vs conventional ferry: what's the difference?

Liberty Lines' hydrofoils and catamarans are built for speed, not vehicles — they carry passengers only. If you need to bring a car to the Aeolian Islands, you'll need the slower, conventional vehicle ferry that Siremar runs on the same routes, typically taking noticeably longer but with a car deck. Most visitors staying on one or two islands don't need a car at all; Liberty Lines' faster passenger-only service is usually the better choice.

Fares and booking

Liberty Lines describes its Aeolian Islands fares as set under a public service contract with regional and national government, rather than fully dynamic pricing — so prices are comparatively stable, though not published as a single fixed table. Tickets can be booked online through the Liberty Lines website or, on some routes, via WhatsApp ticket sales. In peak summer, booking a few days ahead is a sensible precaution, especially for the first or last sailing of the day.

Planning tips

• Confirm whether your sailing is direct or multi-stop — arrival times can differ significantly between two boats to the same island.
• Off-season (autumn to spring), sailings to the more remote islands — Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea — thin out to a handful a day, so plan around the timetable rather than turning up.
