Skyss Ferries & Express Boats: Bergen & Vestland Fjord Guide

Skyss is the public transport authority for Vestland, the region around Bergen on Norway's west coast, and that includes a large network of car ferries and passenger express boats reaching deep into the surrounding fjords. If you've searched for a specific dock name like Lygra or Rubbestadneset and ended up unsure which route it's on, here's how the network fits together.

What is Skyss?

Skyss plans and manages buses, the Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen), car ferries and express boats across Vestland county, under the political direction of the county council. It was originally set up in 2007 for the former Hordaland county and expanded in scope when Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane merged into Vestland in 2020.

Car ferries vs express boats

As with the rest of Norway's coastal transport, Skyss runs two very different kinds of boat:

• Ferje (car ferry) — around 30 vehicle ferry crossings across the region's fjords, using the AutoPASS system: you pay for the vehicle, foot passengers travel free.
• Hurtigbåt / snøggbåt (express boat) — passenger-only fast boats on longer coastal routes, ticketed separately from the bus/ferry zone system.

Two long express boat corridors fan out from Bergen's Strandkaiterminalen:

South: the Sunnhordland route

Heading south, the boat calls at Austevoll (Bekkjarvik, Hufthamar) and Bømlo (Rubbestadneset) before reaching Leirvik on Stord — the Sunnhordland corridor is the one to look for if you're heading to Bømlo or Stord by boat rather than by road and bridge.

North: the Bergen–Sogn/Nordfjord route

Heading north, the boat runs a much longer chain of stops: Lygra, Vardetangen, Skjerjehamn, Sollibotn, and on toward Rysjedalsvika, Krakhella, Askvoll and eventually Florø, Måløy and Selje further north. Lygra, Vardetangen and Sollibotn kai are all stops on this same northbound corridor rather than separate routes — if you're trying to work out how to reach one of them from Bergen, this is the boat.

Local commuter boats

Two shorter routes work more like a ferry-based bus line than a long-distance express boat: the Askøybåten (Kleppestø–Bergen) and Nordhordlandsbåten (Knarvik/Frekhaug–Bergen), both included in the ordinary zone-based ticket rather than a separate boat fare.

Tickets and fares

Short trips on buses, the Light Rail and the local commuter boats use Skyss's zone-based fares, bought through the Skyss Ticket App or a reloadable Skyss card. The longer express boat corridors — Sunnhordland and Bergen–Sogn/Nordfjord — are priced separately as single boat tickets rather than by zone, so budget for a specific route fare rather than assuming your zone ticket covers it. Car ferries use AutoPASS and don't require a ticket to be bought in advance at all.

Using Skyss boats as a budget fjord trip

Neither the Sunnhordland nor the Bergen–Sogn/Nordfjord express boat is marketed as a tourist cruise — they're ordinary public transport — but both routes run through genuine fjord scenery, and travellers on a budget sometimes ride one as a cheaper alternative to a dedicated fjord sightseeing tour.
