Skyss Schedules 2026

Skyss is the public transport authority for Vestland county, the fjord country around Bergen — and the largest ferry network on this site by number of sailings. It runs two quite different things under one name: car ferries that carry the trunk roads across the fjords, and passenger boats serving islands and coastal communities.

The car ferries

These are road links. Sandvikvåg–Halhjem carries the E39 across the Bjørnafjord south of Bergen — about 45 minutes, with 85 sailings a day in each direction, and the busiest crossing in the network. Lavik–Oppedal takes the same highway across the Sognefjord in 20 minutes, running close to a hundred times daily.

Inland the pattern repeats at shorter range: Dragsvik–Hella (10 minutes), Mannheller–Fodnes (15), Anda–Lote (11), Hatvik–Venjaneset (12) and Årsnes–Gjermundshamn (20). None of them need booking; you drive up, join the queue and take the next boat.

The passenger boats

Skyss numbers its boat routes, and several are commuter services into Bergen: 490 Kleppestø–Bergen (the Askøybåten) and 390 Knarvik–Frekhaug–Bergen (the Nordhordlandsbåten). Further north the Florabassenget routes (291–294) link the islands off Florø, the Solund network (391–395) covers the outer archipelago, and 290 Kystvegekspressen runs Florø–Smørhamn–Måløy. Austevoll has its own local boat (2078) plus the 2080 link to Bergen.

A useful quirk: the Askøybåten, Nordhordlandsbåten and Florabassenget routes are priced on the same fares and discounts as the bus and light rail, so a normal Skyss ticket covers them.

Tickets

Boat fares run on single, return and 7- or 30-day period tickets, with prices set from 1 May 2026; the 180-day ticket has been withdrawn. Bicycles and pets travel free on the boat routes as long as there is space — worth knowing if you are island-hopping with a bike.

Car-ferry fares work differently, on the national vehicle-length system rather than zones, and Skyss provides a vehicle fare calculator for them.

Who runs the ships

Skyss plans, tenders and funds; shipping companies operate. Fjord1 and Norled hold much of the work, and contracts move — Fjord1 takes over Lavik–Oppedal from 1 September 2026. If you are looking for a Vestland timetable, look under Skyss rather than under the company whose logo is on the funnel.
