About
About Mannheller ferjekai
The world's longest road tunnel is twenty minutes from this quay, and it did not close this ferry. The Lærdal Tunnel — 24.5 km, opened in November 2000 — made the Oslo–Bergen road ferry-free. Mannheller–Fodnes still runs 58 times, because it serves a different axis entirely.
The crossing
Mannheller to Fodnes takes about 15 minutes across the inner Sognefjord, with 58 sailings in our timetable and 116 across the quay in both directions. Operated by Skyss.
That is roughly one every twenty minutes across the operating day — one of the densest car ferry services in western Norway, and the reason the timetable matters less here than almost anywhere else.
Why the tunnel did not replace it
The Lærdal Tunnel carries the E16 east–west between Aurland and Lærdal. This ferry carries the north–south road across the fjord toward Sogndal and the Sognefjellet. They cross at Lærdal and serve different journeys.
It is a useful corrective to the assumption that any fixed link nearby means the boat is finished. At Tau the tunnel replaced the ferry exactly; here it did not touch it.
⚠ Dense is not the same as continuous
Fifty-eight sailings covers the working day generously and the small hours thinly. Arriving at three in the morning expecting the twenty-minute rhythm is a mistake this crossing punishes with a long wait in an empty car park.
Where it leads
North from Mannheller the road runs to Sogndal, the Jostedalsbreen glacier arms and the Sognefjellet mountain road to Lom — the highest mountain pass road in northern Europe, and closed by snow for much of the year.
Practicalities
County ferry rules: no booking, arrival order, AutoPASS billing by registration, foot passengers free.
