About

About Fodnes ferjekai

Fodnes is the southern quay of the inner Sognefjord crossing, and what makes it worth understanding is what lies immediately behind it: the tunnel portals carrying the main road between Oslo and Bergen.

The crossing

Fodnes to Mannheller takes about 15 minutes, with 58 sailings and 116 across the quay in both directions, operated by Skyss. It is one of the busiest ferry links in western Norway.

The Lærdal Tunnel

A short distance east, the 24.5 km Lærdal Tunnel links Lærdal and Aurland — the longest road tunnel in the world, opened in November 2000, built to give the Oslo–Bergen route a ferry-free winter crossing of the mountains.

Inside, three large caverns are lit blue and yellow to break up the drive. The design exists because twenty minutes underground without a change of scene is a genuine safety problem.

What the two mean together

The tunnel removed a ferry from the east–west route. This ferry, on the north–south route, was unaffected and now runs 58 times a timetable. Norwegian fixed links replace specific crossings rather than the idea of crossings, which is why the ferry map here changes shape rather than shrinking evenly.

⚠ Holiday peaks still exceed the boat

Frequency this high normally means no queue. Easter and the July weekends are the exception: the E16 corridor concentrates traffic onto a fifteen-minute crossing and the waiting lanes fill.

Where it leads

South and east from Fodnes the road runs through Lærdal to the tunnel and on to Aurland, Flåm and the Oslo road. Lærdalsøyri, the old village at the fjord head, has a preserved quarter of eighteenth and nineteenth-century wooden houses.

Practicalities

No booking, arrival order, AutoPASS by plate, foot passengers free.
