About the Mannheller ferjekai – Fodnes ferjekai crossing
Fifty-eight departures a day, from midnight to eleven at night, seven days a week. Mannheller–Fodnes is one of the few Norwegian fjord crossings that genuinely never shuts: a frequent daytime service, and hourly boats through the small hours, so there is no window in which the fjord is closed to traffic. The passage takes 15 minutes.
Riksvei 5, and what waits at the far end
The ferry carries Rv5 between Sogndal and Lærdal. What makes it busy is the road beyond Fodnes: it runs straight into the Lærdal Tunnel, at 24.5 kilometres among the longest road tunnels anywhere, and out onto E16 towards eastern Norway. For anyone driving from the western fjords to Oslo, this boat is not a scenic detour — it is the main road.
How much traffic that means
798,695 vehicles crossed here during 2024, which places it among the heavier county ferry links in the country and explains why the night service exists at all.
One timetable, no exceptions
Every sailing on this route runs daily. There is no reduced weekend pattern and no seasonal variant in the current plan — useful to know if you are arriving late, because the gap between the 23:00 departure and the 00:00 one is the longest wait the timetable ever asks of you.
Vehicles, pets & onboard
