Vestland ferry routes & schedules

Ferry travel in Vestland is overwhelmingly about crossing water, not reaching remote islands. Wide car ferries shuttle back and forth across the mouths of the Sogne-, Hardanger- and Bjørnafjord every 20–40 minutes, and for most travellers they are simply a moving section of road — you drive on, pay by AutoPASS or FerryPay, and drive off ten to forty minutes later on the far shore. The busiest of these, on the E39 between Bergen and Stavanger, carry hundreds of sailings a day between them.

Alongside the car ferries, Bergen is the hub of a fast passenger-boat (hurtigbåt) network reaching out to Sognefjord villages and the island communities of the outer coast — the routes locals use as a bus and visitors use as a scenic day trip. Most Vestland car ferries take no reservation: you queue at the quay, board in order and pay automatically. Sailings run early into the night, and frequency is high enough that a missed departure rarely costs more than half an hour. The scenic express boats are the ones worth planning around, as they run fewer times a day and fill up in summer.
