Ferries from Lofthus båtkai

Lofthus is served twice daily by the same vessel: 10:15 to Kinsarvik, 3.6 nautical miles and 18 minutes north, and 16:55 to Utne, 6 miles and 20 minutes back down the fjord. Seven sailings a week on each.

The Kinsarvik leg is timed at 18 minutes going out and 20 coming in — for a crossing this short, that difference is the boat's calls rather than the distance.

The slope behind the village is one of the great fruit districts of Norway, terraced with apple, plum and cherry orchards that flower in May and give this stretch of Sørfjorden its reputation. Edvard Grieg worked here in the 1870s and 1880s, in a hut moved up the hillside so that he could not hear the hotel. The orchards and the summer boat depend on the same short season.
