Ferries from Utne båtkai

Utne sits where the fjord divides, and the boat calls twice a day: inbound at 09:55 for Lofthus, 6 nautical miles and 20 minutes off, outbound at 17:15 for Herand at 8.8 miles and 30. Seven sailings a week each way.

The two legs are timed differently in each direction — 30 minutes to Herand, 32 coming back — which on a single daily sailing is the whole of the variation.

The Utne Hotel has taken guests since 1722 and is among the oldest hotels in Norway still operating in its original building; the Hardanger Folkemuseum next to the quay holds the region's collections of costume, instruments and boats. The village sits on the point of the Folgefonna peninsula where three arms of the fjord meet, which is why it was worth building a hotel here three hundred years ago.
