Bjelkarøyna is one of the small islands in the Raunefjord within commuting distance of Bergen, and the ferry is its only fixed link. Crossings of this length so close to a city are a reminder of how broken the coastline is here: the island is a few hundred metres offshore and would be a bridge anywhere with less water and more people. Bergen's city boundary reaches down to this quay, which makes Bjelkarøyna one of the few inhabited islands within a Norwegian city with no bridge.
