About the Strandkaiterminalen båtkaiFrekhaug båtkai crossing

This service runs Monday to Friday and shuts down entirely for three weeks in July. It is a city boat rather than a ferry: Bergen’s Strandkaien terminal out to Frekhaug in Nordhordland, timetabled at 25 minutes over roughly 7.6 nautical miles, and built around people who work in the city and live north of it.

Three afternoon departures

The sailings listed run at 14:30, and on to 16:46, all Monday to Friday. That clustering is deliberate: this is the going-home direction, and the morning traffic runs the other way. A boat leaving the city at half past two is early enough for a short day and late enough not to be empty.

Why the times are not round

A departure at 16:46 looks arbitrary until you see it as a point on a longer run that also calls at Knarvik. The boat is working a corridor, and the clock reflects where it is in that rotation rather than a tidy interval from the terminal.

No weekend service at all

There is nothing on Saturdays or Sundays. For visitors that makes the route close to useless; for commuters it is the fastest link between Nordhordland and the centre of Bergen, avoiding a road approach that is considerably slower at peak. The current plan runs to 11 December 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book the return crossing too?

Yes, check the return route for its own times and fares.

Is this a domestic or international route?

Domestic — the whole crossing stays within Norway.

Which company runs this ferry?

Operated by Skyss.

What time is the last sailing?

Sailings run from 14:30 to 16:46.

How long is the ferry ride?

Around 25m, depending on sea conditions.

How many sailings run each day?

How much does a ticket cost?

On most Norwegian road-network ferries, foot passengers and cyclists travel free; cars and larger vehicles are charged automatically via AutoPASS by vehicle length and crossing, so there is no single ticket price. Register an AutoPASS ferry account in advance for a discount, and check Skyss for the current tariff.

Can I do this as a day trip?

A day trip is often possible: with a crossing of about 25m and several sailings a day (first 14:30, last 16:46), you can return the same day. Always check the return timetable before you go.

Does the ferry run all year?

Sailings operate on selected days, and frequency can change between the summer and winter seasons. The timetable above shows the latest published departures — confirm with the operator for off-season dates.

Can I take a car on this ferry?

Skyss does not list vehicle space on this service — plan to travel as a foot passenger. If you need to bring a car, check with the operator for alternative crossings.

Can I take a pet on this ferry?

Most ferry operators allow pets on this route, usually in a carrier, on deck or in designated pet areas or cabins, and registered assistance dogs travel free. Rules and any fees vary by operator and vessel — check with Skyss, so declare your pet when booking.

What's the luggage allowance?

Foot passengers can normally bring their own luggage aboard at no extra charge, with racks or a luggage area near the entrance, and there is usually no airline-style weight limit. Oversized or excess items may carry a fee, so check with the operator if you are travelling with bulky baggage.
