About
About Skjersholmane ferjekai
Skjersholmane is the Stord end of the 40-minute crossing to Kvinnherad, and it exists because Stord's excellent road connections all run the wrong way — north to Bergen, not east to the Hardanger mainland. 22 sailings a timetable make the correction.
The crossing
Skjersholmane to Ranavik takes about 40 minutes, with 22 sailings and 44 across the quay in both directions. Operated by Skyss.
Why Stord needs a ferry at all
The island is joined to the mainland to the north by the Trekantsambandet bridges and tunnels, which put Bergen within easy reach. Eastward, toward Kvinnherad and the Folgefonna peninsula, there is no fixed link and the road route is enormous.
Forty minutes of water replaces the better part of a day's driving. That is a strong case for a ferry even in a country busy replacing them.
⚠ Forty minutes changes the arithmetic
Twenty-two sailings on a ten-minute crossing would be generous. On a forty-minute one it means a missed boat is a real wait, and the vessel is committed for the best part of an hour and a half per round trip.
Check the timetable here rather than trusting frequency, which is the habit most Norwegian crossings encourage.
Stord
An industrial island with a large offshore yard at Eldøyane, a hospital, a college and an airport — unusually well equipped for its size, and the service centre for the whole Sunnhordland district.
Leirvik, the island's town, is the hub of the region's passenger boat network as well.
On the far side
Ranavik opens the Kvinnherad road toward Husnes, Rosendal and the Folgefonna glacier. Rosendal has Norway's only barony, a manor house from 1665.
Boarding
No booking, arrival order, plate-read tolling, free on foot.
