About

About Utne ferjekai

Utne is on the tip of the Folgefonna peninsula between two arms of the Hardangerfjord, and it is a junction rather than a crossing: 22 sailings north to Kvanndal, 17 east to Kinsarvik, 78 in total. Its ferry exists because a bridge went somewhere else.

Where the boats go

  • Kvanndal — about 20 minutes, 22 sailings.
  • Kinsarvik — about 28 minutes, 17 sailings.

Both operated by Skyss.

The bridge that changed the map

When the Hardanger Bridge opened in 20131,380 m long with a main span of 1,310 m, Norway's longest suspension bridge — it replaced the Bruravik–Brimnes ferry outright.

What survived is the crossing further west, where the fjord is wider and the traffic thinner. That is the usual pattern: fixed links take the busiest link and leave the rest.

⚠ Two directions, two different roads

Kvanndal puts you on the Bergen–Voss corridor; Kinsarvik puts you on the eastern shore toward Eidfjord, Vøringsfossen and the road over Hardangervidda. They are not alternatives — they go to opposite sides of the fjord system.

Pick the one that matches where you are actually going before you queue.

Utne itself

A small village with the Hardanger Folk Museum, a hotel that has been running since the 1720s, and orchards on the slopes above. This is the fruit-growing heart of the fjord country — apples, plums, cherries and, increasingly, commercial cider.

Blossom in early May is the reason a great many Norwegians drive here in one specific fortnight.

Folgefonna

The glacier occupies the high ground of the peninsula behind the village, with a summer ski centre on one arm and guided routes onto the ice.

Practicalities

County ferry rules: no booking, arrival order, AutoPASS by registration, foot passengers free.
