Ferries from Kvanndal ferjekai

Kvanndal is a roadside quay on the Bergen–Voss route with a single job: 22 sailings south across the Hardangerfjord to Utne, and through it the whole Folgefonna peninsula.

The crossing

Kvanndal to Utne takes about 20 minutes, with 22 sailings in our timetable and 44 across the quay in both directions. Operated by Skyss.

Why this quay still matters

The Utne side gives access to the Hardanger fruit district, Jondal and the Folgefonna glacier without driving the whole way round the fjord. From Kvanndal that detour is substantial — the fjord arms here are long and the roads follow every one of them.

For anyone routing between Bergen and southern Hardanger, this ferry is the short version.

⚠ Twenty-two sailings is about one an hour

Spread across the operating day that is comfortable but not casual, and there are gaps. On a summer weekend the queue forms on the main road itself, which is the part that catches people out — you are not waiting in a car park, you are waiting in traffic.

The road it sits on

Rv7 and Rv13 meet in this district, carrying Bergen–Voss–Hardanger traffic and, in summer, a large share of the fjord tourism. Kvanndal is a quay beside a road rather than a village, with limited facilities.

Norheimsund, fifteen minutes west, has the shops and the Steinsdalsfossen waterfall that the coaches stop at.

Hardanger

The second longest fjord in Norway and the most agricultural — orchards on every south-facing slope, Vøringsfossen at the head, and Trolltunga above Odda at the southern end. Blossom in early May and the harvest in September are when the district is at its most distinctive.
