This is the car ferry, not the summer passenger boat that calls at the same villages — two entirely different services on the same water, one running all year for vehicles and one running to September for visitors.
Utne and Kinsarvik sit on opposite shores of the Sørfjord, the arm of Hardangerfjorden that runs south between orchards and the Folgefonna icecap. Before the Hardanger Bridge opened in 2013 this crossing carried far more through-traffic than it does now; what remains is local, and it is still the only way across without driving to the head of the fjord.
