About the Ornes ferjekaiSolvorn ferjekai crossing

This crossing exists largely because of a church built around 1130. Ornes is the site of Urnes Stave Church, on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1979 and the only stave church to hold that status. The ferry over the Lustrafjord from Solvorn is how most visitors reach it, and the 20-minute passage covers under two nautical miles.

A small boat, and that matters

The vessel takes around nine or ten cars and up to 60 passengers. On a summer afternoon that capacity is the binding constraint, not the timetable — arriving with a vehicle shortly before a departure is not the same thing as travelling on it.

Departures that run on a single day

Two sailings in the fourteen listed run on one weekday each: 08:50 on Tuesdays and 17:50 on Fridays. A further one at 18:50 runs on Sundays only. The dependable core is eight departures every day between 10:30 and 18:00, with three more Monday to Friday from 07:45.

Timing a visit

The daily pattern begins mid-morning and ends at six in the evening, which brackets the hours a visitor can realistically spend at Ornes. There is no late boat back on most days, so the last departure sets the length of the visit rather than the church’s own opening times.

What's the luggage allowance?

Foot passengers can normally bring their own luggage aboard at no extra charge, with racks or a luggage area near the entrance, and there is usually no airline-style weight limit. Oversized or excess items may carry a fee, so check with the operator if you are travelling with bulky baggage.
