About

About Seljeøya

Eighteen sailings a week cross the 0.7 nautical miles to Selje, each taking six minutes, on four day patterns running from 06:33 in the morning to 21:51 at night — a fifteen-hour operating day for a six-minute crossing.

The two directions are timed six minutes apart throughout, which means the boat turns immediately: it lands, unloads and goes straight back.

Selja, the island, holds the ruins of a Benedictine monastery built around the cave where Saint Sunniva was said to have sheltered and died in the tenth century. The site was the seat of a bishopric before it moved to Bergen in 1170, and the pilgrimage to it continued for centuries afterwards. The boat that crosses in six minutes is carrying visitors to what was, for a time, the most important religious site in western Norway.
