About

About Tau ferjekai

The Stavanger to Tau car ferry does not exist any more. The Ryfylke Tunnel14.4 km under the fjord — opened on 30 December 2019 and made the drive continuous. What survived at this quay is the passenger boat network, and that is a different thing entirely.

What still sails from here

  • Heng — about 15 minutes, 4 sailings.
  • Byre — about 45 minutes, 3 sailings.
  • Sør-Hidle — about 20 minutes, 2 sailings.
  • Fister — about 1 hour.

22 active sailings, operated by Kolumbus.

⚠ Old Preikestolen advice sends you to a ferry that is gone

A great deal of published guidance still describes taking the ferry from Stavanger to Tau and a bus from there to the Pulpit Rock trailhead. The ferry half of that is obsolete.

The drive or the bus now goes straight through the tunnel. If a source tells you to catch a boat to Tau, it was written before 2020 and everything else in it should be checked too.

Sør-Hidle

The twenty-minute run to Sør-Hidle serves Flor & Fjære, the garden island in the Ryfylke fjords where palms and subtropical planting are maintained at 59 degrees north. It is a working horticultural business and a genuine curiosity.

Where Tau sits now

Tau is the road head for the Preikestolen approach and the western end of the Ryfylke road network, twenty minutes from Stavanger through the tunnel rather than forty by boat.

The village is quieter than it was — losing a car ferry moves the traffic somewhere else — and the remaining boats serve the island communities the tunnel did nothing for.

The lesson in the tunnel

Elsewhere on this site, at Valderøya, a subsea tunnel and an express boat coexist because the quay is better placed than the tunnel mouth. Here the tunnel simply won. Which outcome you get depends on geography, not policy.
