Ferries from Cacilhas

The cacilheiro — the orange-and-white boat across the Tagus — is the oldest commuter habit in Lisbon and it is being re-equipped. Transtejo ordered ten all-electric ferries for this crossing and its neighbours, each able to recharge at the quay in five to ten minutes.

The crossing

Cacilhas to Cais do Sodré takes about 8 minutes. It links the south bank of the Tagus directly to central Lisbon, and it is a commuter service first and a sightseeing trip second — though the view of the city from mid-river is the reason many visitors take it anyway.

Our timetable does not currently hold departure times for this crossing. Check the operator before travelling; the frequency is high but the published pattern changes with the working week.

The electric fleet

The new vessels are 40 m long with capacity for up to 540 passengers, built for three routes connecting Lisbon to Cacilhas, Seixal and Montijo. Fast quayside charging is what makes battery power workable on a short, relentless shuttle.

A crossing this brief is close to the ideal case for electrification: the boat spends a large share of its day alongside, which is exactly when it charges.

⚠ Cacilhas is not a destination in itself, and that is the point

The quay sits below Almada, and the classic use of this ferry is a one-way trip for dinner — the seafood restaurants along the waterfront, then the lift or bus up to the Cristo Rei statue and the view back over the bridge.

Going out and returning on the same boat misses what the crossing is for.

Connections on the south bank

Buses fan out from the terminal into Almada and the Setúbal peninsula, and the Metro Sul do Tejo tram runs nearby. For anyone staying south of the river, the ferry plus a bus is usually quicker into central Lisbon than driving over the 25 de Abril bridge at peak.

Season

This is a year-round urban service with no meaningful seasonal variation in the timetable. Summer adds passengers, not sailings.
