About
About Trafikverket Färjerederiet
Färjerederiet is the ferry arm of Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, and it runs the country's road ferries — the stretches where the public road simply continues across water. There are 40 ferry routes, from Norrbotten in the far north to Skåne in the south, crossing sea, rivers, fjords and lakes.
The scale of it
Around a million calls and twelve million vehicle crossings a year. Because these are roads, the crossing is free on every route but one — Visingsöleden on Lake Vättern is the single toll route.
Calling the ferry from your phone
The Trafikinfo Färjerederiet app carries timetables and live disruption information, and on the quieter routes it does something more useful: you can summon the ferry from the app. On a crossing that runs on demand rather than to a fixed clock, that replaces standing at an empty slipway wondering whether anything is coming.
How loading works
Follow the traffic signals at the ramp and take the lane they show — the lights can change from one vehicle to the next, because the crew controls them and sorts the loading order by vehicle size and weight. Never move on red.
Vision 45
The fleet is being converted wholesale: Färjerederiet's strategic plan, Vision 45, commits it to climate neutrality by 2045 in line with Sweden's national target. The plan is decided by Trafikverket's director-general and revised regularly.
How capacity gets tuned
Because these are roads, demand is managed rather than priced. On Gräsöleden in Uppland — a kilometre of water, five minutes, free — Färjerederiet reviewed several summers of traffic and rebuilt the arrangement: fewer days with a second ferry at the shoulders of the season, more sailings on the days two boats do run, and a scheduled break for the day ferry so the crew can eat and the machinery can be serviced. The added departures were placed at the exact times queues used to form. It is a small illustration of what a state ferry operator optimises for when there is no fare to adjust.
Two systems share the same islands
In the Gothenburg archipelago the state road ferries run alongside the regional authority's passenger boats, and they are not the same thing. Hönöleden (Lilla Varholmen to Hönö and Öckerö) and Nordöleden (Burö, Knippla, Hyppeln and Rörö) are road ferries: free, unticketed, carrying cars because the road continues across the water. The Västtrafik boats calling at neighbouring piers such as Kalvsund and Grötö are ticketed public transport. Same water, same islands, two different systems — and no Västtrafik ticket is checked on the road ferries.
