Two ships named after an observatory
The main vessel, M/S Uraniborg, entered service in November 2012. She is a double-ender, so she never turns in port, and carries an azipod — a propeller that rotates through 360 degrees — at each end. She is 49.95 m long, 12 m in the beam, and takes 394 passengers and 14 cars at 10 knots, with a 120-seat saloon and sun decks. The hull was launched at the Crist yard in Gdynia and finished in Denmark at Hvide Sande. Her name came from a public competition: Uraniborg was Tycho Brahe's castle and observatory on Ven. The second ship, M/S Stjerneborg, was built in Norway in 1990 and rebuilt in 2009 — named for Brahe's underground observatory on the same island.
