Kalmar Länstrafik Schedules 2026

Kalmar Länstrafik is Kalmar County’s public transport authority, and the boat it runs between Kalmar and Färjestaden on Öland is unusual for one reason: there is already a bridge.

A ferry running parallel to a road link

The Öland bridge carries the road traffic between the mainland and the island. This service, Kalmar Tullhamnen to Färjestaden and back, exists alongside it — eleven departures each way, 25 to 30 minutes, from 06:45 to 21:30. Almost every other crossing on this site exists because there is no road. This one competes with one.

Which means it is selling something other than access

When a bridge already connects two places, a ferry has to offer something else: a car-free crossing for cyclists and pedestrians, a landing closer to the town centre than the bridge approach roads, or simply a pleasanter journey. The 06:45 first departure and the 21:30 last one suggest it is used as transport rather than as a sightseeing trip.

Different times in each direction

Westbound to Kalmar is timetabled at 25 minutes and eastbound to Färjestaden at 30. On a crossing this short a five-minute difference is a tenth of the journey, and it is worth taking the longer figure when planning a connection at the Kalmar end.

Three different day patterns

The twenty-two departures carry several distinct day masks between them — a daily core, a Monday-to-Friday layer, and a further group running on a partial-week pattern. A summer Saturday timetable and a Tuesday one are not the same service, which matters on a route where the alternative is a long drive round to the bridge.

Authority, not operator

Kalmar Länstrafik plans and publishes the service; it is not the company with the boat. That is the normal Swedish arrangement, and it means fares and tickets follow the county public transport system rather than a shipping tariff. The operator’s own site did not respond when we tried it, so vessel and fare details are not covered here.
