Car-free islands by passenger boat
Many of Bohuslän's most-loved islands — Marstrand, Käringön, Gullholmen, Smögen's outer isles and the Koster Islands — ban or heavily limit cars, so the passenger ferry is how you arrive. Västtrafik runs these archipelago boats as part of the regional transport network, out to the granite fishing villages and, from Strömstad, to the Koster Islands and Sweden's only marine national park. The free road ferries
Where the coast road meets a sound, Sweden's distinctive free yellow road ferries (run by Trafikverket) carry cars straight across at no charge — you simply drive on, engine off, and drive off the far side. They keep the routes around the Bohuslän islands of Orust and Tjörn and the northern coast moving, and are free because they function as a section of the public road.
