The Gräsö ferry is one thousand metres long and takes five minutes, and it is free. It is a Swedish road ferry — legally a piece of the road, not a boat service — which is why nobody sells you a ticket and why the crossing appears in a public transport listing at all.

Who actually runs it

These departures are filed here under the Uppsala regional transport authority, but the vessel and the crossing belong to Trafikverket’s Färjerederiet, the state road-ferry operator, which runs the route as Gräsöleden between Öregrund and Gräsö in Uppland. The distinction matters when you go looking for a timetable: the authority publishes the connection, the national ferry operator publishes the sailings.

Five minutes, and our data says otherwise in one direction

The operator states the crossing as five minutes over 1,000 metres. Our schedule data agrees on Öregrund to Gräsö but records ten minutes on the return, with 62 departures either way. Nothing about a 1,000-metre crossing takes twice as long one way as the other. Take five minutes as the real figure.

The summer arithmetic is two boats, not more sailings

Capacity here is managed by adding a second ferry rather than tightening the interval. In weeks 25 to 33 two ferries work the route every day. Outside that window — from 1 June to week 24, and week 34 to 31 August — it splits by day: one ferry Tuesday to Thursday, two from Friday to Monday. The pattern follows the weekend flow into the archipelago rather than the working week.

What the second boat adds, exactly

On two-ferry days the timetable gains a 09:45 morning departure and an evening one at 17:15 or 18:15 depending on the day. The operator introduced these specifically to break up queues at the times congestion had been building. It also added a service pause on the day ferry for meals and machine maintenance — a deliberate trade, fewer two-ferry days at the shoulders of the season in exchange for more departures on the days that actually need them.

Expect to wait in spring and summer

The operator says so itself: heavy traffic heading out to the archipelago in spring and summer, and especially on certain weekends, can mean waiting longer than usual. There is no reservation on a free road ferry — you join the queue and take the next boat with space, which on a five-minute crossing with two vessels running means the queue moves, but on a bad weekend it still moves slowly.
