About
About Destination Gotland
Destination Gotland runs the sea link between the Swedish mainland and Gotland under contract to the state. The contract is the thing worth knowing about: the agreement with Trafikverket runs until 31 January 2035, which makes this one of the longest fixed commitments behind any route on this site.
Owned by an island company, paid by the state
Destination Gotland AB is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gotlandsbolaget AB, and operates the Visby–Nynäshamn and Visby–Oskarshamn services on behalf of the Swedish government. Head office is in Visby, at Korsgatan 2, with around 400 full-year employees.
Three ships, two of them running on gas
The fleet is three high-speed vessels, of which two are powered by liquefied natural gas and biogas. The company holds ISO 14001 environmental certification; its SF1500 vessel carries catalytic exhaust treatment and burns low-sulphur fuel. In 2023 the operation carried about 1.7 million passengers, 540,000 cars and 760,000 lane metres of freight, and in high summer it runs up to 18 departures a day.
How long the crossing really takes
Our timetable holds 115 departures on four routes. Nynäshamn to Visby has 42 of them and the return 35. The advertised crossing time varies more than people expect: on the Nynäshamn run most departures are timetabled at 3 hours 15 minutes, with a spread up to 3 hours 30, and a single fast sailing at 2 hours 30. Plan on three and a quarter hours unless you have specifically booked the quick one.
The southern route is shorter but thinner
Oskarshamn to Visby and back carry 19 departures each, roughly half the Nynäshamn frequency. Most are timetabled at 3 hours, some at 3 hours 10. Oskarshamn is far down the Kalmar coast, so the shorter sea leg costs a much longer drive from Stockholm — which is the trade the two routes exist to offer.
Getting hold of them
The head office line is 0498-20 18 00, open Monday to Friday 08:00–16:30 and closed for lunch between 12:00 and 13:00. That lunch closure is worth noting if you are calling from outside Sweden and working out a time difference.
