About
About Stockholms stad
This service is free. Not discounted, not free for residents — free for everybody, and it has been since it started. The reason is unusual enough to be worth the whole page: the ferry exists because a bridge was planned and never built, and the city decided that if people were going to be sent round by boat, they should not have to pay for it.
A crossing that replaced a bridge
Sjöstadstrafiken opened in December 2000 and has carried passengers since 2001, crossing the Hammarbyleden waterway to link Södermalm with the Hammarby Sjöstad district on the southern shore. When the planned bridge connection did not materialise, Stockholm made the water crossing free of charge, and that decision has held ever since.
The city owns it, someone else sails it
The service is run on behalf of Stockholm’s Trafikkontoret — the city traffic office — by Ressel Rederi AB. That is why the operator name on these departures is the municipality rather than a shipping company: the city is the authority, the contractor is the one with the boats.
Five minutes between quays, 165 departures
Three legs are recorded here, each timetabled at 5 minutes: Barnängen to Luma, Luma to Henriksdal and Henriksdal to Barnängen. Each carries 55 departures: 49 that run every day of the week and 6 extra that run Monday to Friday only. The weekday surplus is the commuter tail, and it is small — this is a service that runs at nearly full strength at weekends too.
Read the three legs as a circuit
Note how the routes are arranged: Barnängen to Luma, Luma to Henriksdal, Henriksdal to Barnängen. Our data records the loop in one direction only, so there is no separate reverse leg to look up. If you want Luma to Barnängen, it is the same boat continuing round rather than a different service.
What free actually buys you
A three-to-five minute crossing with no ticket, no barrier and no fare machine changes how a route gets used. There is no reason to consolidate trips, no penalty for crossing twice in an hour, and no queue at a kiosk. For a district built on the far side of a working waterway from the city it belongs to, that matters more than frequency does.
