About AtB
AtB is the public transport authority for Trøndelag, the county around Trondheim in central Norway. Buses and trams make up most of the network, but AtB also runs the car ferries and fast boats that connect the Trondheimsfjord communities and the islands off the Fosen coast.
The crossings
Flakk–Rørvik is the busiest by a wide margin — a 25-minute car ferry across the Trondheimsfjord just outside Trondheim, running around 46 times a day in each direction. It is the short way onto the Fosen peninsula and carries commuter as well as holiday traffic.
Brekstad–Valset is the other main vehicle link (25 minutes, about 32 daily sailings). Garten–Storfosna (20 minutes) and Seierstad–Ølhammeren (5 minutes) serve smaller island communities, and the Trondheim–Vanvikan fast boat crosses the fjord to Indre Fosen in about 25 minutes. Further out, Dyrøy connects to Mausundvær in the Frøya archipelago.
Tickets and the open system
AtB prices by fare zone, and one ticket covers bus, tram, fast boat and ferry across Trøndelag. In the Trondheim area there is an open ticketing system: on the green city buses and the tram you board without showing anything, provided you hold a valid ticket. On night buses and regional buses you must show your ticket, and inspections apply throughout.
