AtB

AtB is the public transport authority for Trøndelag in central Norway. It is best known for the buses and trams of Trondheim, but its map reaches far out along the Trondheimsfjord and onto the exposed islands of the coast — and out there, travel means boats. AtB coordinates two distinct kinds of sea service: car ferries (ferje) and fast passenger boats (hurtigbåt).

Car ferries across the fjord

The workhorse is Flakk–Rørvik, the near-constant shuttle between Trondheim and the Fosen peninsula, now worked by battery-electric ferries. Shorter crossings such as Brekstad–Valset and a scatter of island links in Namdalen and around Leka fill in the rest. One detail that catches visitors out: on nearly every AtB ferry, foot passengers ride free. Only three crossings charge anything at all, and then only for vehicles — with a lower rate for zero-emission cars.

Fast boats to the coast and islands

The Kystekspressen hurtigbåt runs the long coastal route from Trondheim toward Kristiansund by way of Brekstad and Hitra, while the short Trondheim–Vanvikan boat is a genuine fjord commute. Further out, the Øyrekka boats connect the roadless communities of the Frøya archipelago — Sula, Mausund, Bogøyvær and their neighbours — where the boat is the only way in or out.

Timetables and tickets run through the AtB app and Norway's national Entur planner; the paid ferries use AutoPASS, and summer brings its own seasonal fares from June through August.
