Ferries from Jøa hurtigbåtkai

Jøa hurtigbåtkai serves the island of Jøa in the Namdalen coast of Trøndelag, just west of Namsos. Jøa is best known as the home island of the novelist Olav Duun, whose sprawling saga of coastal life, Juvikfolket, is rooted in exactly this landscape of low farms, sounds and skerries; a literary pilgrimage as much as a ferry stop.

The quay is a call on AtB's route 980, the passenger express boat that loops from Namsos out to Rørvik and Leka and back. Operated by Vidar Hop Skyssbåter, it is the longest boat line in the AtB network, covering more than 175 kilometres across some fourteen stops. From Jøa the boat threads the coast to Abelvær, on to the regional hub at Rørvik, and out to Namsos in the other direction, with the outer island group of Sør-Gjæslingan added to the itinerary in the summer season, roughly May through August.

This is a foot-passenger and light-cargo service rather than a car ferry. Since the Jøa fixed link opened, road traffic to and from the island runs over the bridge, so the express boat now works as a fast coastal connection for those heading to the outer islands or making the quicker water crossing rather than the long way round by road. Departures are modest in number and follow separate winter and summer timetables, so it is worth checking the current AtB schedule before travelling.

For visitors, Jøa offers quiet walking, coastal scenery and the Olav Duun heritage that the island celebrates each summer.
