Ferries from Flakk ferjekai

Twenty-five minutes, forty-six departures a day, and some of them run on batteries. Flakk is where Trondheim's road network meets the Trondheimsfjord, and the crossing to the Fosen peninsula behaves like a stretch of dual carriageway that happens to float.

The crossing

Flakk to Rørvik takes about 25 minutes, with 46 sailings in each direction in our timetable — roughly a departure every half hour through the day. The route is part of Fylkesvei 715 and sits inside the AtB public transport network for Trøndelag, worked by FosenNamsos Sjø.

Flakk is on the Trondheim side, a short drive northwest of the city.

Hybrids, quietly

Two of the vessels on this route — MF Lagatun and MF Munken — are hybrid electric double-enders, working alongside the conventional MF Trondheim.

Nothing about that changes the passenger experience, and that is the interesting part: on a high-frequency commuter crossing the electrification has to be invisible or it does not work. The charging happens inside the same short turnaround the diesel ships used.

⚠ Half-hourly is not all day

The headline frequency describes the middle of the day. Early morning and late evening the gaps stretch considerably, and this is a commuter route, so the direction of the crowd flips: into Trondheim in the morning, out of it in the afternoon.

If you are catching a flight from Værnes or a train from Trondheim, check the actual departure rather than assuming a boat is always twenty minutes away.

What is on the other side

Rørvik is the Fosen landing — the peninsula between the Trondheimsfjord and the open sea, with Fv715 continuing north through it. The crossing exists because the road around the head of the fjord is a very long way for what is a short hop by water.

Practicalities

No reservations. Vehicles board in arrival order, AutoPASS reads the number plate and bills automatically, and foot passengers and cyclists cross free.
