Ferries from Tánger Med

This is Africa's largest container port and one of the world's top twenty, with capacity for 9 million TEU a year and more than 161 million tonnes of goods handled in 2025. The passenger terminal is a small corner of it — and that scale is exactly why your ferry leaves from here rather than from Tangier city.

⚠ The Algeciras shuttle is not in our timetable

The short crossing to Algeciras across the Strait — about 90 minutes — is listed as a route but currently holds no active departures in our data. Gibraltar is the same.

Those services do operate, frequently, run by several Spanish and Moroccan companies. We simply do not hold their schedules, and we would rather say so than let you assume the crossing does not exist.

⚠ Tanger Med is not Tangier

The port sits roughly 40 km east of Tangier city, near Ksar es-Seghir. Tangier's own harbour, Tanger Ville, handles cruise ships and some passenger traffic but not the long Mediterranean ferries.

Buses and shuttles connect the two, and the transfer takes the best part of an hour. Build it into the plan rather than discovering it after landing.

Why the long routes matter more here

The crossings to Italy, Spain and France carry the North African diaspora returning home, which means the peak is the European summer holiday and the loading is vehicles rather than foot passengers. In July and August the vehicle decks are booked out months ahead.

Formalities

These are external EU border crossings with full passport and customs control on both sides, and vehicle inspection is thorough. Operator check-in times here are realistic minimums, not padding.
