About the GenoaTánger Med crossing

The Genoa to Tanger Med ferry is operated by Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) and is one of the longest scheduled passenger crossings in the Mediterranean. It connects Genoa, in the Italian region of Liguria, directly with Tanger Med, the large port east of Tangier on Morocco's northern coast. This is a genuine two-day sea voyage rather than a quick ferry hop.

Crossing time

In normal conditions the passage takes around 48 hours, and can stretch to roughly 52–54 hours when weather in the western Mediterranean or port traffic causes delays. Passengers usually board in Genoa in the afternoon or evening and arrive at Tanger Med two days later. Some sailings also call at Barcelona en route, which is worth checking when comparing timetables.

Frequency and season

This is a strongly seasonal service. Frequency peaks in summer, with around three sailings per week roughly from June to September to serve the large flow of Moroccan families travelling home for the holidays. Outside the peak the service thins out considerably, often to about one departure per week, and dates can be limited. Always confirm the current calendar before planning.

On board and vehicles

GNV runs big cruise-ferries on this line, carrying foot passengers, cars, vans, motorhomes and freight. Given the two-day duration, a cabin is effectively for comfort; the ships also offer restaurants, bars, shops and deck space. In high season allow one to two hours for boarding and disembarkation, as queues at both ports can be long.

Documents

This crossing leaves the EU and Schengen Area and enters Morocco, so all travellers need a valid passport, and drivers must carry full vehicle documentation. Check Moroccan entry requirements for your nationality before travelling.

Note: service is seasonal and intermittent outside summer; verify sailing dates and any Barcelona stop before booking.
