Porto Torres to Genoa Ferry

The Porto Torres to Genoa ferry connects the industrial port of Porto Torres, in the northwest corner of Sardinia near Sassari, with Genoa, one of Italy's largest ports on the Ligurian coast. It is the main direct link between northwest Sardinia and northern Italy, and one of the few Sardinia–Liguria routes that sails year-round rather than only in summer.

Operators and vessels

The line is served by two companies: GNV (Grandi Navi Veloci) and Tirrenia (which also operates in partnership with Moby). Tirrenia runs nightly departures throughout the year, while GNV adds sailings across the busier stretch from around late May to October. Both deploy large overnight ro-pax ships carrying cars, motorhomes, campers, motorbikes and freight alongside passengers.

Crossing time and timetable

This is a long overnight passage of roughly 10 to 12 hours. Tirrenia's crossing runs around 11 hours or so, while GNV's seasonal service is typically a little longer, in the region of 12 hours. Departures are generally in the afternoon or evening, arriving the following morning, so a cabin is the natural choice for the night at sea. Between the two operators the route offers frequent weekly sailings, especially in high season.

Booking and onboard

Cabin options are extensive on the overnight ships: GNV offers inside and outside cabins in two- and four-berth configurations plus double, family and larger suites, while Tirrenia also provides single berths and budget deck seating. Porto Torres is the gateway to the Asinara National Park, the Stintino beaches and the Sassari region, and it is well placed for onward travel across northern Sardinia.
