About the GenoaBarcelona crossing

Three day patterns — Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday — cover nine sailings a week between Genoa and Barcelona, with five departures spread from 13:00 to 21:00.

Grandi Navi Veloci operates all of them. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday have no scheduled departure in either direction, which for a route between two of the western Mediterranean's largest ports is a deliberate three-day rhythm rather than a thin service.

The crossing runs overnight across the Ligurian Sea and the Gulf of Lion. Genoa was the Republic that rivalled Venice for the medieval Mediterranean trade, and Barcelona the Catalan port that competed with both — a route this old carrying freight and passengers on a fixed three-times-weekly cycle is entirely in character.

About Barcelona

Ask anyone what sails from Barcelona and the answer is the Balearics. Our timetable says otherwise: the busiest link out of this port is Tanger Med in Morocco, with more sailings than Ibiza, Menorca and Mallorca have between them. Barcelona is one of very few ports that reaches three coastlines — Spanish islands, Italy and North Africa — and the traffic is not distributed the way the brochures suggest.
