Genoa to Barcelona Ferry

The Genoa to Barcelona ferry is run by Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) as one leg of the company's long-haul Genoa–Barcelona–Tanger Med line. Rather than a short hop, this is a full overnight sea voyage across the western Mediterranean, linking the Italian port of Genoa in Liguria with the Catalan capital on Spain's northeast coast. Depending on the vessel and sailing, the crossing takes roughly 18 to 21 hours, so most travellers book an evening or midday departure and spend a night aboard.

Route and frequency

Because Barcelona is an intermediate call on GNV's route toward Morocco, sailings are not daily. In practice there are usually a couple of departures per week, with more capacity added over the summer high season when GNV concentrates its Morocco-bound schedule. Frequencies and exact timings shift by month, so the sailing calendar should always be checked for your specific dates before travelling.

On board and vehicles

GNV operates large cruise-ferries on this line, carrying foot passengers, cars, motorhomes and freight. For an overnight passage of this length, a cabin is strongly recommended; reclining seats are the budget option. Onboard you will typically find restaurants and bars, a self-service cafeteria, shops and open deck areas.

Both Genoa and Barcelona are inside the EU and the Schengen Area, so EU and Schengen travellers cross without passport formalities and only need a valid identity document. This makes the route a relaxed, border-free way to combine Italy and Spain, or to move a vehicle between the two countries without the long drive around the French Riviera.
