Ferries from Barcelona

This is Europe's number one cruise homeport and the fourth largest in the world, handling around 3.9 million cruise passengers a year. It is also Europe's ninth largest container port. The ferry terminals where you board for Tangier or Ibiza sit inside all of that, which is why "the port" is not a useful set of directions here.

⚠ Three kinds of terminal, one name

Car ferries use two jetties — Terminal Z at Drassanes on the north side of the Moll de Barcelona, and Terminal T at Moll de Sant Bertran on the other side. Cruise ships use their own terminals further along. The container port is elsewhere again.

Giving a taxi "the port" therefore means very little. Use the terminal name printed on the booking, and allow for the fact that the walk between the two ferry jetties with luggage is not short.

What sails, and where the traffic actually is

Where the terminals are relative to the city

Both ferry jetties sit at the foot of the city near Drassanes and the bottom of La Rambla, with the metro a short walk from Terminal Z. Barcelona-Sants station is about twenty minutes away and the airport around twenty-five — though August traffic near the port makes both numbers optimistic.

August is the month to avoid

Two separate peaks land together: the summer crossing season to Morocco and the ordinary Balearic holiday calendar, with the cruise season at full strength alongside. Vehicle deck space is the binding constraint rather than passenger seats.
