Barcelona to Mahón Ferry

Maó, spelled Mahón in Spanish, is the capital of Menorca and sits at the eastern end of the island around one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean. Sailing into that long, sheltered inlet is part of the experience, and arriving here puts you close to the east-coast resorts, the old town and the airport, as well as within easy reach of central Menorca.

An overnight crossing

Unlike the fast catamaran to Ciutadella, the Barcelona–Maó link is a conventional overnight ferry. It is operated by Trasmed and GNV, with a Baleària sailing on some services. Crossing times run to roughly 8 hours 30 minutes with Trasmed and GNV, and closer to 9 hours on Baleària's ship. Departures leave Barcelona late in the evening, typically between about 21:30 and 22:30, so the boat sails through the night and reaches Maó in the morning; the return leg from Menorca is usually a daytime sailing.

Cabins and vehicles

Because this is a full-size overnight ship rather than a day catamaran, you can book a private cabin to sleep, alongside reclining seats, restaurants, bars and lounges. These vessels carry cars, campervans, motorcycles and larger vehicles, which makes the route popular with travellers bringing their own transport for a longer Menorca stay. Sailing overnight also means you effectively save a night's accommodation and arrive rested.

Frequency is moderate rather than daily-multiple: there are on the order of ten sailings a week between Barcelona and Maó across the operators, with more capacity added in summer. Departure times and the mix of companies vary by day of the week and season, and can shift for weather or operational reasons, so check the current timetable for your travel date before booking.
