About Mahón
The year-round link and the summer one have almost nothing in common. Trasmed sails to Valencia at 22:00 every night of the year, a 930-minute crossing. Grandi Navi Veloci runs Barcelona — 07:00 on Saturdays, 11:00 Tuesday to Friday and Sunday — but only between 2 and 31 August, with the return arriving at 21:45 or 22:30.
So the year-round link is the overnight one to the mainland's south, and the summer-only link is the daytime one to Catalonia. Six sailings a week in each direction to Barcelona for one month; a single daily boat to Valencia for the other eleven.
Mahón's harbour is a drowned river valley running five kilometres inland, one of the deepest natural anchorages in the Mediterranean and the reason Britain held Menorca for most of the eighteenth century. Georgian sash windows in the town are the visible remains; the naval hospital island in mid-channel is the other.
