About Transmediterránea acciona
Trasmediterránea is one of Spain's oldest and most storied shipping lines, founded in Barcelona in 1916 from the merger of four shipowners. For over a century it was a cornerstone of Spanish sea travel — nationalised in 1978, privatised under Acciona in 2002, then acquired by the Canary Islands operator Naviera Armas in 2018 to form the Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea group.
Three historic theatres
Its network long spanned the Balearic Islands (Barcelona, Valencia and Gandía to Palma, Ibiza and Menorca), the Canary Islands from the mainland, and the Strait of Gibraltar and Alborán Sea (Algeciras to Ceuta and Tanger Med; Almería and Málaga to Melilla). Its ships traditionally carried the names of Spanish cities in the "Ciudad de…" style, alongside modern fast ferries.
A century-long run, ending
Burdened by the debt of its expansion, the group restructured in 2022, and in 2025–26 its routes and vessels were taken over by Baleària (the Canaries and Alborán/Strait services) with two ships going to DFDS — effectively ending Trasmediterránea's run as an independent operator after more than a century. Fares are in euros with the usual Spanish resident and vehicle structures.
