About

About Naviera Armas

Naviera Armas was for decades the dominant inter-island ferry operator of Spain's Canary Islands. The family firm was founded in 1941 when Antonio Armas Curbelo, from Lanzarote, bought his first ship; it introduced the Canaries' first roll-on/roll-off vessels in 1975 and began carrying passengers in 1995.

The Canary network and beyond

Its boats knit together Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, with long-haul sailings from Huelva on the mainland and crossings of the Strait of Gibraltar to Tanger Med, Ceuta and Morocco. The ROPAX fleet follows a "Volcán de…" naming tradition — Volcán de Tirajana, Tamadaba, Timanfaya and others — alongside high-speed catamarans.

A group in transition

In 2018 Naviera Armas acquired Compañía Trasmediterránea to become Spain's largest shipping group, but the debt that came with it led to a financial restructuring in 2022. In 2026 its Canary Islands and Strait routes were sold to Baleària and two vessels to DFDS, so the historic Armas brand is being absorbed into new operators. Fares are priced in euros with resident discounts under Spanish law.
