About Almería
A thousand metres of Victorian ironwork stands in this harbour and has loaded nothing since 1973. The Cable Inglés is the most visible structure at the Port of Almería, it was built to pour iron ore into ships, and it is now a protected monument being turned into an exhibition space.
The Cable Inglés, in numbers
- Built 1902–1904 by Scottish engineers working in the tradition of Eiffel, for the Glasgow-based Alquife Mines and Railway Company.
- 3,824 tonnes of steel, 8,000 m² of timber and 1,152 m³ of concrete.
- Inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII on 20 April 1904.
- Ore came 90 km by rail from Alquife in Granada province until the traffic stopped in 1973.
- Declared of Cultural Interest in Andalusia in 1998; restoration is turning it into an exhibition centre with a viewpoint along the top.
Why it matters to the port
It is the reason Almería has a deep-water harbour at all. The port was developed to export minerals from the interior, and the passenger terminal that now sends ferries to North Africa inherited infrastructure built for iron.
Standing on the waterfront the sequence is legible: the pier, the rail alignment behind it, and the modern quays alongside.
The working port today

⚠ The terminal is central, the queue is not
The passenger building is within walking distance of the city, which is unusual for a port handling this much vehicle traffic. In the summer crossing season the vehicle marshalling extends well outside the gates and onto the approach roads.
Foot passengers keep the short walk. Drivers should treat the published check-in time as a floor rather than a target.
Season
The Morocco and Melilla routes run year round as working links for residents and freight. The pressure period is mid-June to mid-September, and within it the last week of July and the first two of August.
