About

About Nador

A five-and-a-half-billion-dollar port is opening a short drive from this quay, and when it does, the ferry terminal at Beni Ensar will become the smaller half of Nador's relationship with the sea. Nador West Med is scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2026.

What is being built

  • 5.4 km of breakwaters and 4 km of quays.
  • A terminal with 1,440 m of berth at 18 m depth — 900 m for containers, 540 m for general cargo.
  • Opening capacity of 5 million containers a year, designed to expand to 12 million.
  • 800 hectares of industrial land at the start, with plans for 5,000 — larger than Tangier Med's industrial zones.
  • Morocco's first LNG terminal, a floating storage and regasification unit piped to industrial hubs inland.

Total investment is put at about $5.6 billion in public and private money.

⚠ It is not a passenger port, and that is the point

Nador West Med is being built for containers, cargo and energy. Your ferry from Almería will keep arriving at Beni Ensar, where it always has.

What changes is everything around it: road capacity, industrial traffic, employment and the shape of the region. A passenger quay that has been the main reason to know the name Nador is about to become a footnote to something much larger.

The ferry port today

Beni Ensar handles the crossings to Spain and France — Almería with 9 sailings, Barcelona and Sète with two each. Where it sits, how the Melilla border next door works and what the documents involve are covered on the Nador guide.

The short version is that the quay is thirteen kilometres from Nador city and shares its entrance with a Spanish enclave — which makes the arrival of a deep-water megaport in the same bay area a genuinely strange piece of geography.

Why here

The eastern Rif has deep water, space and a position on the Mediterranean shipping lane between Gibraltar and Suez. Tangier Med proved the model at the western end of the Moroccan coast; Nador West Med is the same logic applied to the eastern end.

For a traveller the practical consequence over the next few years is construction traffic and changing roads rather than changed sailings.

Season

The Almería link runs year round; Barcelona and Sète are thinner and more seasonal. The summer crossing operation between mid-June and mid-September remains the constraint on vehicle space, and no amount of container capacity changes that.
